Monday updates: Investigators hunt for motive in attempted Trump assassination

Investigators continue to try to determine a motive in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend.

In the wake of Saturday’s shooting that killed one spectator and injured at least two others, investigators are hunting for any clues about what may have drove Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to carry out the shocking attack before he was fatally shot by the Secret Service.

Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, spent much of Sunday on the phone with friends, news hosts and local and foreign officials the day after he was injured in the assassination attempt. He also traveled to Milwaukee ahead of the Republican National Convention, which starts today.

In the Tampa Bay area, church leaders grappled with the political violence in sermons, while Trump supporters rallied in downtown Clearwater.

The 2024 Republican National Convention promises to be even more passionate and heartfelt than before, coming days after an assassination attempt on the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump.

Trump was left wounded after a sniper opened fire. One spectator was killed and two others critically injured. Trump has said he will still appear at the convention.

“I truly love our country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our great nation this week from Wisconsin,” Trump posted on Truth Social Saturday after the shooting.

Convention planners and Trump's website released a list of headliners and keynote speakers Saturday of GOP leaders, conservative commentators, Trump family members, potential running mates, and celebrities, all of whom have been public and eager Trump supporters. And Florida is well represented.

Floridian’s fundraising effort for victims shot at Donald Trump rally doubles $1M goal

A key financial operative for Donald Trump’s campaign in Florida has started a GoFundMe page to help assist the spectators who were injured in Saturday’s attempted assassination of the former President. She sought to raise $1 million and that figure has already been broken.

Meredith O’Rourke launched the fundraising online effort shortly after Trump had his ear grazed in an assassination attempt Saturday about 6:15 p.m. as he started his open-air campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvanian.

While the former President was whisked away with blood on his face by U.S. Secret Service agents and was treated and released at a Butler hospital, one rally attendee was shot to death by the gunman and at least two spectators were severely injured by bullets fired by the would-be assassin.

Secret Service personnel shot and killed the gunman who was perched atop a building about 150 yards from the podium where Trump was speaking.
