Their fiscal year begins July 1, with hiring decisions due in April, so knowing what the financial picture looks like makes a big difference. There had been some speculation that the Legislature might hold a budget special session next week. But leaders nixed that idea Wednesday afternoon, saying they have no agreements in place. “While I believe we are making great progress, it will not be necessary for you to return to Tallahassee prior to the special session [on congressional redistricting] called by Governor DeSantis,” Senate President Ben Albritton wrote to senators. Florida TaxWatch urges Legislature to leave tourist development taxes aloneFlorida TaxWatch is urging the Legislature not to pass any hotel tax reform, arguing that the millions of dollars generated every year should be used to grow tourism, not to fix community-wide problems. The group released a new report as TaxWatch CEO Jeff Kottkamp prepared to speak at the International Drive Resort Area Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday. Members of the I-Drive Chamber include Disney, Universal, and other businesses that benefit from taxpayer-funded advertising. Hotels and short-term rentals in Orange County add a 6% fee called the Tourist Development Tax (TDT). In February, this tax brought in $38.2 million as many tourists visited Orlando’s theme parks. “To remain competitive and sustain Florida’s share of the U.S. tourism market, Florida must continue to invest in tourism marketing and promotion to make sure that when tourists begin to plan their next vacation, they think first of Florida,” TaxWatch said in the 18-page report called: “Tourism In Central Florida: Why Tourist Development Tax Revenue Should Not Be Diverted.” National Association of Police Organizations Endorses Blaise Ingoglia for CFOThe National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) announced its endorsement of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Blaise Ingoglia for a full term as CFO this week. "On behalf of the National Association of Police Organizations, I am very pleased to formally announce NAPO's endorsement of Blaise Ingoglia for Florida Chief Financial Officer," NAPO President Michael McHale said in a statement. "Throughout his career, Ingoglia has demonstrated strong, consistent leadership and a longstanding commitment to supporting the men and women of law enforcement. His record reflects a deep understanding of the challenges officers face and a dedication to ensuring they have the resources and backing needed to keep communities safe," McHale added. |
