August 23rd Florida Primary: Unofficial Results

Yesterday, Florida held its Primary Election. While precincts are still not 100% reported, below is a report highlighting the unofficial results. But first, a brief summary of the landscape in the march till November.

Only Senator Rubio’s United States Senate seat is up for reelection this year. Also, due to redistricting, all U.S. Congressional seats, State Senate, and State House seats are on the ballot, as well as every Florida Cabinet position (Governor, CFO, Attorney General, and Commissioner of Agriculture). Several incumbent state legislators have already won re-election automatically, as they did not get an opponent in the Primary or General.

In the Florida Senate, 31 of that body’s 40 seats have contested races. And in the Florida House, 90 of the House’s 120 seat body are contested. As you will see below, there were a handful of incumbent state legislators who lost their primary elections in upset races. Others know they're returning to Tallahassee after last night's vote, but may still have to clear a fairly easy general election hurdle.

We now also have a clearer picture of all the match ups in Congress, the Florida Cabinet, and the State House and Senate for the November 8th General Election. Republicans are looking to retain their significant majorities in the Cabinet, Senate, and House.

For your convenience, below is a link to the most updated information and results from the Florida Division of Elections.

Federal Races

All Congressional incumbents won their primary elections. Below is a breakdown of the three open-seat Congressional races and the one contentious incumbent race.

In US Senate Race, Senator Marco Rubio (R) did not face a primary challenge. On the Democratic side, former Congresswoman Val Demings easily won her primary to face Rubio in the general.

In the newly drawn 4th Congressional District, which is still being litigated in the courts due to it now being only a Northeast Florida seat, three Republicans and two Democrats competed to win their parties’ nomination.   On the Republican side, Aaron Bean, an outgoing State Senator, emerged victorious in the Republican primary. On the Democratic side, roughly 200 votes separate Tony Hill and LJ Holloway.

In the 7th Congressional District race to replace retiring Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, Cory Mills defeated former firebrand State Representative Anthony Sabatini in an eight-way Republican primary.  Mills is expected to easily defeat the democratic nominee in this newly drawn R-leaning district.

In the 10th Congressional District to replace Congresswoman Val Demings, a whopping 10 Democrats faced off in the primary. Emerging victorious is Maxwell Alejandro Frost, pulling off an upset to defeat State Senator Randolph Bracy, former Congressman Alan Grayson, and Congresswoman Corrine Brown.  Frost will be expected to easily win his general election is this D-leaning seat.

In the 13th Congressional District, vacated by Charlie Crist (D) who is running for Governor, Anna Paulina Luna, a self-branded America First candidate, won her primary. Redistricting made the 13th district more conservative, meaning she is expected to win her general.

In the 15th Congressional District, which is new following the census, five Republicans, including three well-known figures faced off: former Florida Secretary of State Laurel Lee, State Senator Kelli Stargel, and State Representative Jackie Toledo. Ultimately, Lee won the Republican primary and should have a clear path to victory in this R-leaning district.

In the 23rd Congressional District, opened due to Ted Deutch declining to seek reelection, Jared Moskowitz-D, a former State Representative and Director of Emergency Management for Governor DeSantis, won his primary. Although he still has a general election opponent, he is expected to win this D-leaning seat.

State Cabinet

None of the incumbent Florida Cabinet members-Governor Ron DeSantis (R), Attorney General Ashley Moody (R), and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis (R)-faced a primary opponent. However, they all have general election challenges to face in November.

In the Democratic primary for Governor, Congressman and former Governor Charlie Crist (D) defeated sitting Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried by roughly 25 percentage points. It was a very negative primary, with TV ads criticizing Fried’s career as a lobbyist and   Crist’s record as a former Republican Governor. Ultimately, the voters chose Crist to square off against DeSantis in November.

In the Democratic primary for Attorney General, former State Attorney Aramis Ayala defeated attorney Daniel Uhlfelder and Jim Davis and will go on to face sitting Attorney General Ashley Moody in November.

State Senate

In District 2, Jay Trumbull (R), a State Representative, won his primary and will face a Democratic challenger in the General Election. The winner will replace Sen. George Gainer, who chose to not seek-reelection. Trumbull is expected to win the General election in this heavy R-seat.

In District 5, a race to replace term-limited Sen. Audrey Gibson (D), State Representative Tracie Davis (D) defeated Reggie Gaffney (D), a Jacksonville city-councilman.  She is expected to easily win her General Election in this D-leaning seat.

In District 15, State Representative and former State Senator Geraldine Thompson (D), defeated State Representative Kamia Brown (D) by less than four thousand votes. Facing no general election opposition, Geraldine Thompson will once again be a State Senator.

In District 35, incumbent Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book (D) faced a significant and heated primary challenge from Barbara Sharief (D), who largely funded her own campaign and possesses a decades-long career in local government as a former Mayor of Broward County. With help from her colleagues in the Senate and hard work in the field, Book ultimately protected her seat by a significant margin and will return to the Florida Senate.

State House

In District 1, incumbent Michelle Salzman (R) faced a tough primary challenge from former State Representative Mike Hill (R). Ultimately Rep. Salzman’s fundraising advantage and record of legislative results propelled her across the victory line.

In District 3, a two-way Republican primary occurred to replace Rep. Jayer Williamson (R), who chose not to seek reelection. Dr. Joel Rudman (R) defeated Mariya Calkins (R), the wife of a Santa Rosa County Commissioner who also had the endorsement of Congressman Matt Gaetz.

In the District 5 race to replace termed limited Rep. Brad Drake (R), Republican Shane Abbott defeated Vance Coley, the son of two former state legislators.

In District 6 to replace termed out state Representative Jay Trumbull (R), Griff Griffitts (R) defeated Brian Clowdus (R). With no general election opponent, Griff is elected to the Florida House.

In Jacksonville's District 16, Kiyan Michael (R) defeated both of her primary opponents and only faces a write-in for the general. Kiyan, whose son was killed my an undocumented illegal alien, earned the endorsement of Governor Ron DeSantis, which played a key role in her victory over two individuals-including a former State Representative-who had both been in the race much longer.

In District 29, State Representatives Webster Barnaby (R) and Elizabeth Fetterhoff (R) were forced to square off following redistricting, as they were both drawn into the same district. Barnaby has a 31-vote lead over Fetterhoff, and a recount to confirm results is likely.

In District 59, Berny Jacques (R) defeated Jennifer Wilson (R), a long-time legislative staffer.

In District 62, former State Representative Michelle Rayner (D) defeated former State Representative Wengay Newton (D). Rayner had initially withdrawn from the Legislature to run for Congress, but after redistricting, shifted her plans back to the State Legislature

In District 101, plaintiff attorney Hillary Cassell (D), won a three-way primary in this heavily Democratic Broward seat.

In District 120, State Representative Jim Mooney (R) narrowly defeated Rhonda Lopez in a three-way Republican primary. Lopez ran a strong campaign despite accusations of coordinating with Democrats, but well-liked Mooney's support in the Florida Keys seems to have given him just enough votes to maintain his seat.
